This seems to be an enormous progression from the likes of the iPhone 4 and 10 years is not too far away.,

Habitat imagines a world where housing has grown so limited that people revolt and construct their own parasitic homes on any available space they can — like the interior of the famed Arche de la Défense in Paris. Pocket of Active Resistance is a modular complex designed by Parisian architect, Stéphane Malka, who sees existing buildings and infrastructure as the foundation for more sustainable and affordable housing. But to get to that point, we, the people, would hijack these buildings and take them as our own.

“The Cost of Spam: CO2 Emissions” by designer Antonio Lupetti’s looks at the environmental impact of the remarkably high number spam emails send around the world. 183 Billion to be exact.

Contemplating the blue-boarded frozen construction sites on his daily commute from Penn Station to Woods Bagot’s former Garment District office, Woods Bagot New York Principal Jeffrey Holmes considered how to reimagine and revitalise the City’s urban fabric with the promise held by such captivating physical spaces.

“Owners and developers are spending money every day to cover these idle sites, and people are hesitant to build on them in the meantime,” said Holmes. “We wanted to make something high quality with a real presence to attract top-notch venues.”

Innovative and iconic, yet flexible, dynamic and sustainable, Icebergs – like their namesakes, are created for maximum impact with minimal means – multipurpose architectural placeholders until developers resurrect their projects.

Conceived from ‘cradle to grave,’ Woods Bagot’s temporary structure design features recycled, recyclable and reusable materials that promote efficient delivery, installation, performance and disassembly whilst maximising vital light and air connections. The design uses a modular and reusable steel frame, wrapped in translucent polycarbonate panels at grade and topped by inflated pillows of super-lightweight ETFE (Ethylene Tetrafluoroethylene). One-tenth the weight of a conventional US taxpayer building and able to be erected and dismantled in days, Icebergs deliver speed to market, reduced labour costs, and minimise future development hurdles.

Designed specifically to engage the audiences of brand and mission driven organisations, Icebergs are unique physical spaces that support a wide range of uses: interactive “pop up” retail sites to exhibitions and cultural events; from local start-ups and not-for-profit organisations to regional and global brands. Programmed to flex and seem directly embedded in the city, Icebergs are an experience venue and a marquee space where the building becomes iconic and the temporal architecture is an integral part of the event.

“Embracing the financial and temporal realities of stalled sites, Icebergs represent fresh thinking about the intersection of use, function and design. Icebergs reactivate and reinvigorate these now-dormant spaces. This design initiative offers new opportunities for businesses and institutions to expand awareness, drive engagement, build sales or advance their mission,” said Holmes.

Scalable and conceived to address a global issue through local results, each Iceberg’s off-the-shelf components are reusable and easy to maintain – ensuring low life-cycle costs and a minimal environmental footprint. Importantly, Icebergs are transportable in a single shipping container – easily set adrift to dilapidated sites in cities around the world: from New York to London, Beijing or Bondi.

Puma’s New Line of City Bikes

The bikes were designed by Biomega and Jens Martin Skibsted (whose recently founded design firm we featured here). In all there are five different models, and when you factor in all the colors and sizes available, there’s 120 configurations. Though many of the designs are loud and style-heavy, there are enough variations for most tastes.

When most people think of mobile phone manufacturers, companies best known for making sports shoes aren’t the first names that come to mind. But Puma is going to give it a go anyway in tandem with Sagem: the company has begun offering its new Puma Phone, a video chat-capable mobile phone with GPS, HSDPA 7.2 Mbps connectivity, and a solar panel in the back that can be used to recharge the device by just leaving it out in the sun.

With a painted logo on the outside and complete renovation on the inside, the shipping containers’ past life is well-disguised. While the structure of the shipping containers is evident in the multiple frames created by the knocking down of the shipping containers’ walls, the open and well-lit environment makes the industrial aesthetic seem almost intentional. Additionally, built-in details, such as the two decks located on the upper floors and recessed lighting, gives the store a greater sense a permanence and less like a prefabricated structure that can simply be folded up and moved.

The store is actually not the first example of Puma’s efforts in mass customization in its retail stores. They created one in 2006 in New York City’s Union Square. Back then, the athletic brand was able to set the entire store up in less than a week thanks to the fold-out capabilities of container architecture.

We first cover this last year. Puma estimates that the bag will slash water, energy, and fuel consumption during manufacturing alone by 60%–in one year, that comes to a savings of 8,500 tons of paper, 20 million mega joules of electricity, 264,000 gallons of fuel, and 264 gallons of water. Ditching the plastic bags will save 275 tons of plastic, and the lighter shipping weight will save another 132,000 gallons of diesel.

Nyehaus, Friedrich Petzel Gallery and Metro Pictures present SWELL—with curatorial team Tim Nye and Jacqueline Miro—a survey of surf-themed art produced by city dwellers that will open to the public on July 1st at the three gallery locations in Chelsea. Swell will include work by most members of the group of Venice Beach artists known as Light and Space and Finish Fetish (all of them surfers) including De Wain Valentine, Peter Alexander, Larry Bell, Billy Al Bengston, Laddie John Dill and others. To quote Dave Hickey in his essay about Primary Atmospheres:

“In its initial vogue, these works spoke directly to a new kind of artistic decorum—less aggressive than pop, less ideological than Minimalism, and less maidenly than post-painterly abstraction. It had a kind of gallantry—the cool courtesy of a well-born rake. California Minimalism created a gracious, social space in it’s glow and reflection; it treated us amicably, made us more beautiful by gathering us into it’s dance. It still does this today, so I am not amazed by the renewed interest in this work. I am still amazed, however, that my beach-bum pals could have created such a capacious and courtly art, although beach bums, I suppose, have dreams like everybody else.”

Around 80% of the world’s population has been watching at least some part of the games, which have been going on since June 11, 2010 and will continue until July 11. Around 95 million people watch each match. Of course, not all of us are able to watch the games of our favorite teams on the weekends or after work, so some of us have been sneaking off, calling in sick or otherwise slacking off to watch football.
