Photo sharing app Instagram has commenced internal advertising, as Facebook attempts to start making money from its billion dollar deal last year. The first official ad was a sponsored picture from designer Michael Kors. The image captured a ladies watch that was displayed against a table of coffee and biscuits. The caption of the post read “Pampered in Paris.”
The advertisement ran last Friday and targeted women within the United States who fell into a certain age bracket. Users could see the post in their feed regardless if they were a follower of the fashion label.
Facebook is currently adding magazine quality ads to Instagram as it hopes to bring in revenue. Adidas, Lexus, Paypal, Burberry and Ben & Jerry’s ice cream will be among the first brands to advertise on the network.
Facebook reported a profit of US 425 million in the quarter that ended on September 30. The figures demonstrated a dramatic increase in advertising revenue. Almost half of this was generated from smartphones or tablet services.
