Nice post Linsay and it's great to see you getting excited about Collaborative Consumption - we certainly believe it is going to change the way people think about what and how they consume in a big way!
We have been following the trend for the last three years, and while it's true there is a lot of excitement and activity in countries like Brazil, Argentina and Chile of late, this is by no means diminishing the activity that is occurring in the 'Western' world. There are major Collaborative Consumption hotspots across the States, with most new start-ups emerging in SF and NYC, and equally in London, Paris, Berlin and Barcelona on the other side of the world. These cities are leading the charge and have many well established businesses that are starting to become part of mainstream culture (carsharing, ridesharing, peer to peer accommodation etc), and we are seeing the ripple effect around the world, including right here in Australia.
It will certainly take more time before we can officially say it's gone mainstream, and the best thing we can all do is to try out every service we come across - without a critical mass of users, these platforms just can't succeed.

I look forward to hearing where your collaborative journey takes you!
