An exciting project on funding platform Kickstarter aims to build a pool in Manhattan, utilizing the water that surrounds it.
Launched in June 2010 by ‘productive building’ group Family and multidisciplinary art and design group PlayLab; +Pool emerged out of the scorching New York summer of 2010, battling a want to dive into the surrounding – yet not so clean – rivers around Manhattan. Based on a the shape of a New York street intersection, the pool design will include a Children’s Pool, Sports Pool, Lap Pool and Lounge Pool. Wildlife, impurities and odors present in the river water will be kept at bay via a three-layer filter system built directly into the pool walls.
So far the team have met with swimmers, designers, engineers, community organizers and consultants; plus a number of municipal and civic organizations to meet city permit requirements. $25,000 is needed to begin initial testing of the filtration materials and methods. Ultimately around half-a-million dollars will be needed to built the first prototype, and move into the final stages of development.
