Goal setting is certainly a motivating experience. I love to hear people’s expectations, vision or desired state for their future. Its always a great conversation exhausting the possible. It is one of the most invigorating experiences.
I love the line BHAG, a friend and mentor of mine often refers to identifying your “Big Hairy Audacious Goal” and when the question is thrown at me, its never a cut and dry exercise and certainly not an easy purpose to identify. Recent BHAGS I have heard range from financial independence to saving villages in third world nations to making $1M sales in October. I love the exercise and it gets us thinking constantly about why we do what we do.
The problem however is that if we don’t set ourselves a BHAG, we can often leave ourselves with really common “left unsaid” goals that dominate our mind set. People set goals such as “not wanting to look stupid, not wanting to fail or hoping they are not the one who is called on in conference”. These are overly achievable goals… like the last time you were in a meeting with the objective to “not screw up!” or “don’t say the wrong thing.” These goals… whilst simple can sabotage your real goals and your ability to achieve.
A friend of mine once reminded me to prepare for failure, then bite off more than you can chew and chew like hell. I first heard this 5 years ago and was recently reminded of it. Its OK to declare a goal of starting a business that may fail, or to create a blog that people may not read. Or to go beyond this and create the goal to save a village (you know who I am talking about). If we do not have these goals, then how exactly will we stumble upon achieving something remarkable?
Here is a great example of a BHAG that leans towards remarkable:
